Spring in the Antipodes

It's Spring here now which means it's time to get out in the garden.
Unless something very interesting happens I probably won't be
researching or doing new posts until Winter, around April, but I
will still be checking my email.

1820s Pacific Missionaries

I have a cousin in the North of New Zealand that I have a funny thing in common with - we are both descendants of the missionaries that circulated between
Tahiti, Northland, and Syndey, but not on the side we are related on, so neither
of us had any idea of it until running across references on the net. Hers was Mr Puckey, and mine was JM Orsmond. Those people formed quite a limited circle in the 1820s and tended to have large families and intermarry with each other as I think I
have said, so to study one is to come across them all, appearing in different settings.

Family history is strange.

Isabella Nelson - JM Orsmond

Have made contact with a fellow descendant of Isabella Nelson in Australia -
this is the first 4th cousin I have met up with, for some reason this is more
rare. Its obvious now I think of it, but until she said, I hadn't twigged that
our relatives in Tahiti must speak French - so silly when I used to study it,
and new perfectly well that is what they speak there. Just didn't make the
connection.
Now have a large collection of names and dates for Tahiti that I didn't have
before, I always wondered what happened after Caroline Orsmond left there in
1848, as they were such a large family.

Photos

I've finished scanning and labelling all those photos that came in the post, apart
from saving a sample of each person's handwriting from the backs.
I've realised that I am saving each photo in several forms - bitmap, for long-term storage because they don't shrink, jpeg above 1mb for printing out at some stage, jpeg under 1 mb for uploading and emailing, paper, and cd. This is a lot but I can't yet think of a better way to handle things. There are also so many in the "family tree" folder that it takes a long time to sift through them and can be hard to find the one I want if I didn't name it carefully.

I can't go through and rename them, or move them to new folders, as some of them are linked to my family tree program and they stop working if renamed or moved.

I'm certainly learning a lot.

I sent notes to the new cousin in Wellington with the query whether he would like
photos on disc as I can't print them all out.

Florence Hart

My grandfather's father Samuel George Archbold remarried after his first wife died
around 1910 - can't find the date yet or the record of the new marriage. His second
wife was Florence Hart, who lived to an old age and of whom I now have a colour photo among others. She seems to have been a really lovely person, something glows out of her photos, and it is said that my grandmother liked her better as a mother-in-law, although my grandparents emigrated in 1921, a year or two after the marriage.

This is what I know, off the back of a photo: Florence, known as Floss, had been the second wife of a man she met in London while in service with/to his sister. They had a daughter, Sissie Hart, who I think may have been named Frances. This husband died after only four years of marriage, some time
after which Floss married Samuel. Floss was not Chichester-born. I can't work out what her maiden name was from the BDM as marriages including a "Hart" and a "Florence" are too numerous.
I can't find a lead by looking up Frances Hart either. Floss must have been
born between about 1862 and about 1890 which is a pretty wide range. I'd like to know more about her, just because of her photos :)

Archbold photos

Lovely bunch of Archbold photos from new "cousin" down south - I really appreciate
these! Including a photo of Emma Finley Archbold nee Brooker's grave beside
her husband. I thought she died in Woolwich in 1923 - either they brought the body back, or I was mistaken.

Archbold and Noyce photo packet

Rather than copy them, a relative took the plunge and *posted* me several hundred photos of the Noyces and Archbolds, ones they inherited, mostly from the 20s-40s, and they wrote the names on the backs where the previous comments didn't cover it. I've been scanning them, annotating them, and naming them so that I can print them out and upload them to the other website. And send the originals back.

The notes on the backs are fascinating, they are like little postcards with all sorts of comments on them - probably a hangover from the time when photos were sent as postcards. A lot of them are written in fountain pen, and sometimes it has run if it got wet.

Its been a great help filling in gaps in the family trees and adding new generations.

At the same time I got a mailing from an elderly Archbold 2nd cousin once removed in the Wellington area who isn't online and must have done all their research on foot, as it were. (I wouldn't really know how to do that) I am wondering how best to send them what I have, in what form, and wondering what they would consider relevant - eg for myself, I like getting information and photos of distant cousins, and find it helpful and valuable, but I understand many others prefer to focus on their immediate ancestors and don't want to/have time to pursue what they see as sidelines.

But your siblings could have memories of your parents/grandparents that you never
had, back through each generation. I've "found" ancestors in the census images living with relatives in later life, just by making routine checks that didn't
seem so romising at first.

Those little tiny snaps you get about 3 inches by 2 don't look like much but when you scan them and blow them up they can be very informative. I suppose they were good for posting overseas between Chichester and Hawera.

Family names represented: Noyce, Archbold, Roberts, Nielson, Stubbington, Hart, Whitlock Locations: Chichester, Hawera, Christchurch

Wrapson-Bartlett marriage

I got the certificate for the above in the post yesterday. 4 September 1847. No real surprises except that I note that William and Mary each signed their names with an "X". Doesn't mean they couldn't read of course. Is it also possible they could write their names but were embarrassed to do it badly?

Reminds me of what I read about people from a Sussex agricultural labourer background often not being literate. I think there was a lot of unemployment/poverty in Sussex around that time too for the farm workers.

Jollie Huguenots

I spent a couple of days trying to find any evidence for the family story that the Jollies are descended from Huguenots who fled France: "The Edict of Nantes drove my progenitors out of France, and they settled in the North of Scotland. My grandfather, somewhere about the latter part of the last century, left the north of Scotland and settled in Carlisle....." (Edward Jollie, journal)

That isn't actually correct, the Edict of Nantes stopped the persecutions - Henry of Navarre was sympathetic to the Huguenots. But in 1685 came the
*Revocation* of the Edict of Nantes, and it all started up again. Apparently French Huguenots had been moving to England ever since the 1500s, and not just over one time period, so although there was a big influx around 1700, it wasn't the only place you would have to look to find French ancestors coming in.

The stuff I found said that at one point, there were more French in Berlin than
Germans - hard to believe!!

Anyway I found a cluster of French families who had their children christened in
the Huguenot areas of London in the 1600s but no obvious connections eg the same
first names as our lot or anything. They were all spelt Jolly, too, not Jollie.
I looked up some of their names eg "Etienne Jolly" in France, but there wasn't any obvious connection there either.

I did read that most Jollys come from Languedoc.

Then I find that plenty of them went straight to Scotland from France, it being
a protestant place, and they were welcomed by the Scots in the Edinburgh area
(ie Canongate) because they had good *skills* (as in Napoleon Dynamite).

So I looked at the baptisms for Canongate area but didn't see any obviously
French Jollies or Jollys. I will have a look in the North.

Its tough when people migrate as the connections are lost and there often
isn't anything to link them with the family they left behind unless they
have distinctive middle names or occupations.

It was interesting to note that France was impoverished after the Revocation
partly because the skilled craftsmen left in large numbers, and England
and Scotland were presumably enriched as a result. I wonder if that was
one of the causes of the French Revolution?

Anyway my conclusion: we may never know if the Huguenot connection is real, unless something new comes to light.

Archbold

I just got my first contact off this blog, so I am very happy. A third cousin on the Archbold side, descendant of Frederick William Thrusher Archbold, south of here :)

The Right Hon W. W. Grenville to Governor Phillip
Despatch No. 6 per transport Scarborough

Whitehall, 24th December 1789

Sir,

The second fleet
-------------------
In my letters of the 20th June and 24th August, I informed you that
it was the
intention of Government that a farther number of convicts should be
sent out in
the autumn, with a view of making such arrangements as might be
necessary for
their reception. I am now to acquaint you that measures have been
taken for that
purpose and that 930 males and 78 females have embarked on board the
ships named
in the margin, now assembled at Spithead and in readiness to depart
the moment
the wind proves favourable for their proceeding down the Channel
(Surprise,
Scarborough, Neptune)

The number of female convicts bearing a great disproportion to that
of the
males, it was thought advisable that such of the latter as were
married should
be allowed to take their wives with them on board the ships in which
they have
been embarked, or even women that cohabited with them; but
notwithstanding the
indulgence held out to them of supplies of provisions and clothing,
very few of
the two latter descriptions of women have been prevailed upon to
accede to the
proposal. Such of them, however, as shall arrive within the limits of
your
Government are to be furnished with same proportions of those
articles as the
female convicts.

SHEFFIELD steelmonger Newton Chambers, from Thorncliffe in Chapeltown, is to feature on the ITV history programme The Way We Were next week. The popular archive series uses archive footage, home movies and personal testimony to build a portrait of life in the 20th century. Newton Chambers was established in 1793 and closed in the early 1980s but at its height was one of the most powerful firms in the country.Iron used to build Tower Bridge in London was produced at the factory and during the Second World War Newton Chambers produced 1,160 Churchill tanks.A model tank still stands to this day at the old site occupied by Christian Salvesen at the end of Warren Lane.Such was the factory's importance that bombs fell during the Blitz near the local villages of Warren and Howbrook, which were most probably trying to target the large industrial complex. The Way We Were will be screened at 7.30pm on Tuesday March 22.Last Updated: 16 March 2007
